Rebecca Hartum
Assistant Coach

Rebecca Hartrum begins her fourth year as an assistant coach with the Christopher Newport women’s lacrosse program after returning to the Captains following a one-year stint as the head coach with Fox Chapel High School in 2019.

Prior to her time in the Keystone State, Hartrum played an integral role with the Captains. After joining the program as an assistant coach in August of 2015, she helped Christopher Newport reach new heights during its transition to the vaunted Capital Athletic Conference. During her first stint in Newport News, she helped the squad compile a 32-22 record, including back-to-back 11-win campaigns in 2016 and 2017.

In her first season as an assistant coach, Hartrum helped Christopher Newport climb as high as 15th in the IWLCA National Coaches Poll while leading the nation in free-position percentage. The Captains also ranked first in the CAC in scoring offense during both the 2016 and 2018 campaigns.

Along with the team's accomplishments, Hartrum also helped mentor eight All-Conference performers and six All-Region selections during her first three seasons with the program. Additionally, she helped Meaghan Galvin become the program's first-ever All-American after the former standout picked up national accolades in 2016 and 2017.

In addition to her time at Christopher Newport, Hartrum previously served as an assistant coach at Virginia Wesleyan in 2015. She also saw time as an assistant at the high school level with West Chester East in Pennsylvania and Cape Henry Collegiate in Virginia Beach. Meanwhile, she spent time as the Director of Coaching at Virginia Rush Athletics from 2013-15 and worked as the Women's Lacrosse Director at the United Sports Training Center in Downingtown, Pennsylvania from 2012-13.

Prior to joining the professional ranks, Hartrum excelled as a lacrosse player at nearby Old Dominion. From 2009-12, she starred on the attack for the Lady Monarchs and was a team captain during her final two campaigns. A three-year starter, she was the squad's second-leading scorer as a senior and paced the team in free-position goals.

A communications major with a marketing minor, Hartrum graduated with honors from ODU in 2012.

Colleen Bourgal
Assistant Coach

Colleen Bourgal begins her first season as an assistant coach with the Christopher Newport women’s lacrosse program after piecing together a decorated playing career with the Captains from 2015-18.

Bourgal, a 2018 graduate of Christopher Newport, currently serves as a third grade teacher at Riverside Elementary School. She will serve alongside fellow assistant coaches Rebecca Hartrum and Catie Chess on a staff led by head coach Lisa Valentine.

During her four-year stint with the Captains, Bourgal appeared in 63 games while earning 49 starts. A force on the offensive side of the ball, she deposited 82 career goals while adding 27 assists. Among her highlights, she posted 11 tallies against nationally-ranked competition during her career and established the single-season program record with four man-up strikes during her freshman campaign.

Punctuating her career with a tremendous senior season, Bourgal scored 43 goals in 2018, including seven hat-tricks. During that run, she registered at least one goal in 18 consecutive appearances from February 21 through April 28, which equaled the eighth-longest streak in school history. The Massapequa Park, New York native eventually earned first-team All-State accolades during her final season and competed in the North-South Senior All-Star Game.

Along with her work on the field, Bourgal served as a team captain during her senior season and was a member of the Capital Athletic Conference All-Academic Team for her efforts as an undergraduate English major before attaining her Master of Arts in Teaching.

Current Christopher Newport Lacrosse players will be on staff at each event as well.
